Thursday morning I packed up and headed out. Stopped for a cooler full of groceries and then stopped on the Androscoggin River near Bethel, Maine and fished for a couple of hours.

It was breezy and very sunny. No bugs were hatching and while I had a nice time in the water the fish were not biting.

I headed over to camp. I unpacked and worked on a beer. We headed over to the Androscoggin at about 6 pm to see if the alder fly hatch was on. It was. I stayed at my usual spot. I managed a few trout but was amazed to watch the show upstream; huge trout 4-6 lbs were in a feeding frenzy and jumping clear out of the water in pursuit of the alder flies. What a show.

No big fish for me from the Andy this year.

The next morning we intended to get up and do a dawn assault on the Rapid River. Instead we slept in. Later that morning we went over to look at the Connecticut River and scout of a put in and take out spot for a pontoon boat trip. Here's the take out.

After scouting the drift we decided to fish a bit.

The Connecticut was pretty dead but we both managed to put the hook in a couple of small browns, but they all came off before we could land them.

That night we went back to the Androscoggin in Errol, the alder fly hatch was apparently over and the river was dead. Not a fish moved.

The next morning we again planned to go to the Rapid. We suited up in our waders and trudged in. This trail used to be fairly nice and could be navigated in a pair of bean boots, now you need waders because about 3/4 of the way in you end up wading through 100 yds or so of calf deep boot sucking mud and water. The mosquitoes were insatiable, swarming us the entire way. Thanks to liberal application of natrapel I was able to survive with only a small number of bites. Arriving at the river we discovered we owned the spot, no one had come in from the camp side. I rigged up my rod and was about to head out when it started to pour.

I could see some fish working upstream so I worked my way up there to fish. Once there I could see a couple of really large fish working but they were out of my reach. First cast I hit an 18" salmon, while trying to get him into my hand for a picture he spit the hook and disappeared. A few casts later I hit a 14" salmon, once again losing him while trying to line up a picture. After stinging about 6 more fish they stopped hitting. I switched to a caddis emerger pattern and got a fish on the first cast, a real racer (skinny river fish).

Later as the rain ended I moved down stream and managed a few more on caddis emergers. We decided to leave about 11am, the fishing had slowed as the sun started to peek through the clouds.

That night we intended to fish the Magalloway river but it was extremely crowded so we decided to head back to camp and feast on hot wings and beer and watch a movie.

Sunday morning's plan was to hit the rapid again at dawn but it was not to be, at 4:30am it was 38 degrees with near gale force winds and we decided to go back to bed.

The ongoing temper tantrum of the left in Wisconsin demonstrates the left's lack of respect for our representative democracy. Remember when Obama told the republics "I won"? Remember when the Democrats jammed their ill conceived "ObamaCare" down our throats? Remember Obama telling Republicans they could "come along for the ride" but they needed to "sit down and shut up in the back of the bus"? Remember all the talking heads of the party mouthpiece telling us "elections have consequences"?

Democrats only support democracy when they are winning. The rest of the time they undermine the legislative process with threats, coercion and legal action.

But in this case the underlying reason for the Democrat's hysteria is money; funds derived from a circle of corruption. It is no secret that the vast majority of political donations coming from unions goes to Democrats. So when a "public service" union sits down at the table to "negotiate" for wages and benefits with the politicians the negotiation is always win/win for the union and the pols, while the public gets to pick up the tab. As union wages and membership rise, union dues increase and that gives the unions more money to give back to the very politicians that negotiate their benefits and wages.

While I believe that unions, like all parasites, eventually sicken or kill their host, I have no objection to public employees forming unions. I do object to public unions making political contributions.

The congress and all the states should pass legislation blocking political contributions from unions that represent public employees. Failure to do this is de facto consent to corruption.

Over on the pub a discussion broke out because my wife recently bought a Prius. Some people thought that planning for increases in energy costs was akin to asking for prices to rise. I posted this in response

I've been an advocate of an "apollo" like program to end the US dependence on imported oil since about 1974.

We cannot drill our way out of this, but not drilling doesn't help even more. In the meantime I don't believe that the attitude of 1 of us, or even 50 million of us will impact the price at the pump for the foreseeable future. We are held hostage to a legacy of bickering and indecision reaching back to the first Arab oil embargo in 1973-74. Every President and every congress since then has failed us in a most fundamental way. We should have realized then that it was only a matter of time before this would undermine our country.

I honestly believe that we need a leader who can stand up and make this stick:

"Part of what makes the US both free and successful is the fact that we have millions of cars. Personal transportation is one of our greatest success stories. Instead of insisting that Americans change the way they live, limiting our freedom, our choice and destroying our standard of living, our very culture, we should instead embrace this fundamental fact and address the real issue, that being our dependence on energy imports. The fix for this is twofold; 1. we drill every greasy spot in sight in order to increase supply which will reduce prices (short term fix) and 2. we invest in converting ourselves to a hydrogen economy (the long term solution). That investment will be expensive but in the end the US will once again be the innovator of the world by being first. That investment will pay us back many times over just as the Apollo program has."

In the meantime reality rears it's ugly head, gas will hit 5 or 6 dollars a gallon this year and it's a damn good bet that it won't go down much. Smart people plan for reality, I'm also installing a new highly efficient furnace this spring and doing a fair amount of work to the house intended to cut my heating and cooling costs because those are going to skyrocket along with gas and every other thing we purchase.

From the Washington Examiner comes the story of how the Coast Guard failed to follow their own rules and may have contributed to or caused the oil leak.

But in the critical first days after the explosion, the new report reveals the U.S. Coast Guard disregarded its own firefighting policy and might have caused the oil rig to sink -- prompting the leak that resulted in the largest oil spill in U.S. history.
Evidence unearthed by reporters Aaron Mehta and John Solomon shows the cash-strapped Coast Guard broke its own rules and didn't have a firefighting expert on the scene to oversee the private boats battling the blaze. There's an ongoing investigation to determine if the salt water sprayed on the burning oil rig caused it to sink.
"The question of what caused the platform to collapse into the Gulf ... remains unanswered and could prove vital to ongoing legal proceedings and congressional investigations," the article states. "That is because the riser pipe from which the majority of BP’s oil spewed did not start leaking until after the rig sank.

A judge had resentenced a 70-year-old civil rights lawyer to 10 years in prison for letting a jailed Egyptian sheik communicate with his radical followers.
Federal Judge John Koeltl sentenced Lynne Stewart in Manhattan after she pleaded with him to reimpose the two-year, four-month sentence he had originally given her in 2006. She said she has been diminished since her November imprisonment.
An appeals court had ordered a new sentencing, saying the judge needed to consider whether she committed perjury. Koeltl says she did and he says she lacked remorse after her first sentencing.
Prosecutors had asked the judge to impose a sentence of at least 15 years.
